As it turns out, I have not been Carpe-ing the Diem and living my life to the fullest. Carpe Donut has been offering these bites of organic, made from scratch heaven since 2007 and I just had my first one last week.
I've seriously been missing out.
These are mind blowingly good.
I’m not actually a donut person. The run-of-the-mill donut is insubstantial, making me feel like I ate nothing but greasy, sugary air. It’s not even worth it. But take a look at the compete ingredient list for Carpe Donuts.
- organic unbleached wheat flour
- organic pasteurized apple cider
- pure cane sugar
- local pasteurized eggs
- pure soybean oil
- baking powder
- vanilla extract
- salt
- organic cinnamon
- organic ginger
- organic nutmeg
- organic cloves
There is actual food in this food!
This donut is significant but not heavy. It's sweet but not sickly. It's a whole other level of the donut realm.
The Carpe Donut shop is located right behind another local fav, C’ville Coffee. Carpe's adorable red wagon (named Gypsy) can be found wandering all over town at various events and venues. They even cater weddings. It's almost enough to make me want to do that wedding thing all over again.
Their menu is respectably retained; organic coffee, hot chocolate and fresh mulled, local apple cider complement the donuts. And the ingredients are all thoughtfully chosen; their milk doesn’t contain rGBH, and they use organic cocoa and spices.
And in other fabulous news, the donuts are available frozen, so you can enjoy the bliss without getting out of pjs. (If you were wondering how I got the ingredient list, it's from the quickly diminishing six pack in my freezer...)
If you can't catch the cart, the following places can also satisfy your Carpe Donut fix:
ETA: Not just good donuts, but good people, too?? Check out the reader's story in the comments below...

Another reason to love Carpe...C's preschool class was out on the Downtown Mall last year on a fieldtrip somewhere. All the kids saw the "donut man" and started chanting "DONUTS! DONUTS!" The teachers didn't have any money on them and as they were telling the kids the bad news, Carpe gave them all FREE donuts. He told the teachers if they had time they could run back and pay him back...if not no biggie. (They of course paid him back.) That is a donut man I will love forever.
